Text Box: SUMMARY AND MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER

SUMMARY

As you can see, a number of different services and agencies become involved in child sexual abuse cases. This is because a wide range of experience and skills are needed to ensure the protection and welfare of the victim, the support of the victim's parents and caregivers and to see that the offender is dealt with properly.

The decision to report the suspected sexual abuse of a child is not an easy one and neither is what happens after you make a report easy.

We hope that the “WWHIIT?” programme will assist by clarifying the procedures and support, outlining your and the child's rights and letting you know that:-

reporting sexual abuse is not only the right thing to do for the sake of your child, but it also assists in the protection of other children as well.

 A Message from the
Commissioner For Children

The services outlined in the “WWHIIT?” programme have been put in place to protect children from sexual abuse and to help them recover where they have been abused. If you are involved with any of the agencies or procedures described in this programme and you feel that things are not progressing as they should, or that your concerns are not being taken seriously, then you have the right to complain - and don't be afraid to do so.

First of all, try raising your concerns with your contact person for the agency you feel you are having the trouble with. This will usually resolve your problem. However, if it does not, then the agency should have its own complaints procedure and you should ask about this.

Alternatively, you can contact the office of the
