Text Box: A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER FOR CHILDREN

The Office of the Commissioner for Children sent this message for the launch of this website.

Roger McClay, Commissioner for Children, was happy to support the launch of What Will Happen If I Tell? He believes the programme will be a very positive resource to promote and enhance children's rights.

The Office of the Commissioner for Children is committed to promoting the welfare and interests of children and young persons.  The Office has a particular interest in promoting research and resources relating to the welfare of children and young persons.

Mr McClay pointed out that New Zealand has an obligation under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child to ensure that children have such protection and care as is necessary for their wellbeing.

Article 17 of the Convention expressly encourages the media to disseminate information and material of social and cultural benefit to the child.

Mr McClay said, "Children whose situation is precarious in one way or another can find it particularly difficult to make themselves heard and influence their situation".

“Children have a right to be safe and society's responsibility is to see that they are."

Text Box: “What Will Happen If I Tell?” is dedicated to Laurie O’Reilly who, as Commissioner For Children, showed a commitment to his job that served as an inspiration to us all.

Laurie and the Office of the Commissioner of Children supported WWHIIT? At it’s inception and assisted with initial fund raising.

The programme was launched by Laurie’s son, Chris O’Reilly, and Roger McClay, Commissioner For Children, on 12th July 2000.
